| | "EasyA" (2010)
Overrated yet still entertaining teen comedy/homage to 80s teen comedies about an intelligent/witty high school girl who is pretty much invisible amongst her peers until she unknowingly starts a rumor about herself having sex with a college student, but instead of fighting the rumor she creates new rumors about herself being promiscuous. The film wasn't particularly funny but the writing [particularly the dialogue] was pretty solid, I especially found the parallel to "The Scarlet Letter" very interesting.
Decent job by second-time director Will Gluck ("Fired Up!"), solid job by rookie screenwriter Bert V. Royal, and good film editing by Susan Littenberg ("Bride Wars") . Great performance by Golden Globe nominee Emma Stone ("Zombieland", the upcoming Spider-Man reboot) even though it seemed like she was trying too hard to be witty at times, it was interesting watching her in her first lead role.
- Great supporting performances by Stanley Tucci ("What Just Happened") and Patricia Clarkson ("Shutter Island", "The Woods").
- Good supporting performances by Thomas Haden Church, Penn Badgley ("Gossip Girl"), Lisa Kudrow ("Friends"), Dan Byrd, Malcolm McDowell ("Halloween II"), Fred Armisen ("SNL"), Alyson Michalka, and Amanda Bynes as a religious hypocrite.
- Decent performance by Cam Gigandet ("Twilight","Pandorum").
Good luck to Emma Stone at the Golden Globes, she'll probably win Best Actress in a Comedy due to the buzz this film has received. Overall it's a solid movie, worth a viewing or two but not completely deserving of all of the acclaim it's received, like most movies.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
